In 1987, Dr. Edward J. Cooper, MD, opened our clinic after first losing 65 pounds. The diet program Dr. Cooper used to lose weight and keep it off for the remainder of his life is the same program the clinic uses today. The clinic's diet program is a physician-supervised program that uses appetite suppressants in conjunction with restricted calorie and fat intake. Dr. Edward Cooper's wife, Bonnie Cooper, PhD, is the nutrition specialist. Her nutrition orientations are free of charge to both new and returning patients.
You will fill out some brief health history paperwork followed by one of our helpful office aides taking your vital signs (including height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, BMI). You will then see one of our staff physicians who will give you a brief physical and go over your medical and diet history with you. If everything checks out okay and the physician deems it necessary, you will be prescribed an appetite suppressant medication. We do have a pharmacy on-site for your convenience. After you have seen the physician, we highly recommend and encourage you to stop by and see our nutrition specialist, Dr. Bonnie Cooper, to go over what kinds of foods you should be eating and not eating, tips on cooking healthier, recipes, and to answer any of your nutrition related questions. The nutritionist is always free of charge.

Qsymia, and Contrave are the appetite-suppressant medications that we prescribe. There are stricter regulations than those for the other medications we prescribe here, such as phentermine, because they have recently received FDA approval. They also require a monthly pregnancy test. We are currently unable to fill these medications in our pharmacy, although there are other pharmacies in the Baton Rouge area that are able to fill them. To be eligible for any of these medications, you must have a BMI of 30 or greater or a BMI of 27 or greater with at least one co-morbidity factor of either high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.
Qsymia
is a combination of phentermine and topiramate. When you are first prescribed qsymia, there is a two-week titration dose before you go up to the normal monthly dose. The first time you are prescribed Qsymia you will receive a 28-day supply of medication, and the following visits, you will receive a 30-day supply. Check out their website for coupons and savings offers. Also, more insurance companies are covering this medication, so it's a great idea to check with your insurance company as well. The cost of qsymia to be filled is approximately $150 before insurance and coupons, depending on where you get it filled and insurance coverage. You can find more information and coupons at www.qsymia.com.
Contrave
is approved by the FDA in 2014 and contains 2 medicines (naltrexone HCl and bupropion HCl). Contrave also runs around $250 when you get it filled, although we do have coupons. Check out www.contrave.com for more information.
